ABOUT THE PROJECT:

In 2011, Spirit Winter Percussion took a year off from WGI and prepared all winter for a journey they made with Spirit of America Band in September to South Africa. The group of 150 performers brought donated instruments, started a band in Durban, South Africa, taught workshops in all different media including art, textiles, set and costume design, theatre, music, etc. and brought 2 full staged productions. Spirit Percussion specifically did a cultural drumming exchange with some percussionists there, and the whole ensemble performed in the premiere of a new musical medium called Instrumental Theatre: In Motion in Johannesburg, South Africa. Spirit of America also did an hour staged field show production and workshops with hundreds of students in Durban, South Africa, culminating in a huge drumming feature at the end of the show, drumming with all the students who partook in the workshops that week. This life-changing experience culminated in the 2012 indoor season, when Spirit brought their show Fusion to Winter Guard International circuit.
